Many practices are preparing to celebrate another year of hard work with their annual Christmas party. While these events are a great opportunity to reward employees and boost morale, they can also present challenges for employers if expectations around behaviour are not clearly established.

But did you know your practice could benefit from having a Christmas party policy?

Why is a Christmas party policy important?

Although Christmas parties often take place outside normal working hours and away from the workplace, employers may still be responsible for certain incidents that occur during work-related social events.

Excessive alcohol consumption, inappropriate behaviour, harassment and discrimination can quickly turn a festive celebration into a serious workplace issue.

All employers have a legal duty to take all reasonable steps to prevent sexual harassment of employees in the course of employment. Work-related social events can fall within this responsibility.

A clear conduct policy helps protect employees, minimise risks and ensure everyone can enjoy the celebrations safely.

Setting clear expectations

Your Christmas party conduct policy does not need to be complicated. However, it should clearly outline the standards of behaviour expected from employees.

Remind staff that workplace policies relating to bullying, harassment, discrimination and misconduct continue to apply at work-related social events.

The policy should also address responsible alcohol consumption, respectful behaviour towards colleagues and third parties, and the potential consequences of inappropriate conduct.

Communicate before the celebrations

Having a policy is only effective if employees understand it.

Before the event, circulate the policy to all employees and provide a friendly reminder of behavioural expectations. Managers should also understand their responsibilities and be prepared to respond appropriately if concerns arise.

Make reporting arrangements accessible

Employees should feel confident raising concerns without fear of retaliation.

Ensure there are clear, confidential reporting routes, including an alternative contact where a complaint involves a manager. Any concerns should be taken seriously, investigated fairly and addressed promptly.

Celebrate responsibly

A Christmas party should be an enjoyable occasion for everyone. By setting expectations early, communicating clearly and providing accessible reporting arrangements, employers can create a positive environment while reducing the risk of workplace disputes.
