If you have received a letter from the General Dental Council (GDC) informing, you that a complaint has been raised can feel overwhelming. It is important to pause and read the letter thoroughly and remember that a notification does not in itself place your registration at immediate risk.

What a GDC Notification Actually Means

The GDC’s statutory function is to protect the public by investigating concerns that may call into question a registrant’s fitness to practise.

A notification typically means:

  • A concern has been received.

  • The GDC is assessing whether the matter falls within its remit.

  • You are being invited to provide observations within a specified timeframe.

  • No findings of fact or wrongdoing have been made at this stage.

Common Triggers for GDC Concerns

Concerns reaching the GDC often involve:

  • Alleged clinical shortcomings.

  • Record-keeping deficiencies.

  • Consent or communication issues.

  • Professional conduct concerns.

  • Health or performance matters.

  • Criminal cautions or convictions.

Once the letter has been reviewed thoroughly, it is important to promptly notify your indemnity and seek legal advice for further assistance and guidance in preparing your response.

You may be required to provide the GDC with your observations by a specified deadline, it is important to diarise the deadline so a clear and concise response can be prepared. This is one of the reasons you should seek legal assistance in the first instance to ensure the correct regulatory process is adhered to. This includes collating your clinical notes and any supporting documents that may assist with your case and to exhibit with your observations. Your legal representative will also provide the GDC with any CPD, audits, and reflections on the issues raised to show insight and remediation where appropriate.

To mitigate the risk of escalation, you need to ensure to engage with the GDC’s investigation and ensure clear communication is provided at every stage. Most investigations conclude without severe sanctions, but it is important that if a GDC notification letter is received you are supported throughout each stage.
